Mr. Unthank comes to RLD from the New Mexico General Services Department (GSD), where he served as the deputy cabinet secretary and has extensive private and public sector management experience spanning a period of more than 40 years.
Mr. Unthank’s private sector experience includes serving as President and CEO of several family-owned New Mexico-based businesses, as the President and CEO of Tetra Corporation in Albuquerque, and as the in-house management consultant for Santa Fe Trust Company. His governmental service includes serving as a member of the Construction Industries Commission (RLD) from 1989 to 1991, director of the Construction Industries Division of RLD from 1991 to 1994, and as the director of Manufactured Housing and Construction Industries Divisions, as well as assistant superintendent of RLD during the period of 1997 to 2002.

Subsequently as a part of that organization, Mr. Unthank helped to create and serve as the 1st executive director of the Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS), a not-for-profit organization designed to “lessen the burdens of government.” He currently serves on the Board of Direction for the National Council of Government on Building Codes and Standards, a unit within the National Institute of Building Sciences.
Mr. Unthank’s primary goal while RLD Superintendent is to encourage business growth while keeping New Mexicans safe.
