The purpose of the Professional Psychologists Act is to insure that the public is adequately protected from the practice of psychology by unqualified persons and from unprofessional conduct by persons licensed to practice psychology. The Board regulates the requirements for licensure, examination and continuing education. The Board disciplines individuals who have violated the Professional Psychologists Act or the Board’s rules and regulations. The law requires that anyone engaged in the practice of psychology or using the title “psychologist” or “psychologist associate” must be licensed.
NATIONWIDE CRIMINAL HISTORY SCREENING. All applicants for initial licensure in any category in New Mexico are subject to a state and national criminal history screening at their expense. All applicants must submit two (2) full sets of fingerprints, completed fingerprint certificate form, signed authorization for criminal background screening and fee at the time of application. (1) Applications for licensure will not be processed without submission of fingerprints, completed fingerprint certificate form, signed authorization for criminal background screening and fee. (2) Applications will be processed pending the completion of the nationwide criminal background screening and may be granted while the screening is still pending. (3) If the criminal background screening reveals a felony or a violation of the Psychologist Examiners Practice Act, the applicant/licensee will be notified to submit copies of legal documents and other related information to the board which will make the determination if the applicant is eligible for licensure or if disciplinary action will be taken.
Fingerprint cards, verification form, release of information form must be submitted with a $44 money order or cashier’s check directly to the NM Department of Public Safety for processing, please mail the cards, forms and the payment to: Fingerprint Section
