New LP Gas and Mechanical Bureau Policy

LP Gas And Mechanical Bureau LP-04 Licensing And Inspection Process

At the May 18, 2007 CIC meeting, the Commission adopted a policy under which the exams for MM-2 or MM-98 license classifications would satisfy the LP Gas Bureau’s LP-04 exam requirement. The MM-3 license classification, authorized to work on natural gas systems, will also be able to work on LP Gas systems working within the scope of his/her license classification. In addition, the installation of LP Gas systems by mechanical licensees will be performed and inspected pursuant to a mechanical permit instead of an LP Gas permit. The licensing process will be effective June 1, 2007, and the permitting and inspection process will be effective July 1, 2007.

Licensing Process
  • MM-2 and MM-98 licensees must submit an LP-04 license fee of $125 to the Division’s licensing vendor. MM-2 and MM-98 licensees must submit proof of general liability insurance in the minimum amount of $500,000 to Division’s licensing vendor.
  • MM-2 and MM-98 licensees must submit proof of certification in one of those classifications to Division’s licensing vendor.
  • LP-04 license is issued by Division’s licensing vendor.
Permitting Process
  • Mechanical contractors with an LP-04 or LP-05 license must acquire a mechanical permit for LP Gas installations before the LP Gas work is begun.
  • The procedure for permitting LP Gas work will be the same as for permitting natural gas work.
  • The contractor shall specify on the mechanical permit whether the installation is for natural gas or LP Gas.
Inspection Process
  • Requests for inspections must be called in to the CID Support Center by the permit holder. See Inspections page for more information.
  • When work has been approved by the mechanical inspector, an approval tag will be issued by the inspector.
  • LP Gas cannot be introduced into the building until this approval tag is in place.

Any person engaged in the installation, servicing or repairing of LP gas system components without being properly licensed or working beyond the scope of their license shall be subject to penalties as described in the New Mexico Construction Industries Division Licensing Act and the LPG and CNG Act.

Journeyman Electrician Certificate Reciprocity

January 1, 2006, the State of New Mexico began a program of reciprocity with certain participating states. This program enables journeyman electricians who are properly certified in any one of the participating states to become certified in New Mexico using their out-of-state certification to satisfy New Mexico's examination and work experience requirements. For a complete description of the Reciprocity Program and a list of participating states read the Construction Industries Division Bulletin No. 01-05.
