New Broker Course Nearing January 1 Roll Out; Will Be Required of Brokers First Licensed After Jan. 1, 2009

Approved Instructors For New Broker Business Practices Course

A new 30-hour course, New Broker Business Practices, will be required of all associate brokers licensed for the first time on or after January 1, 2009. The course is scheduled to be available by January 1, 2010. New Broker Business Practices is being developed for the New Mexico Real Estate Commission under contract with the University of New Mexico Continuing Education Division.

Patterned after courses that are called “post-licensing” courses in other states, the New Broker Business Practices course covers everything from the basics of establishing a real estate business to the successful closing of a transaction. Between now and the end of 2009, the Commission will be piloting the new course,  finalizing the participant and instructor manuals, and training and certifying instructors to offer the course beginning on January 1, 2010.

Because it took nearly a year to develop the course, associate brokers who were first licensed in New Mexico on or after January 1, 2009 will have only two years to complete the course. In subsequent years, new associate brokers will have a full three-year licensing cycle to complete the course. However, by completing the New Broker Business Practices course, new associate brokers will receive 10 hours of education category continuing education credit toward the 30 hours required for license renewal. The course will also be available to other brokers not in their first licensing cycle.

For further information, contact the Commission’s Education Administrator, Claire Conrad, at (505) 222-9825 or Claire.conrad@state.nm.us.
