BULLETIN NO. 01-05: LICENSE RECIPROCITY REQUIREMENTS
ISSUED TO: CONTRACTORS, JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIANS, AND INTERESTED PARTIES BY: LISA D. MARTINEZ, DIRECTOR, CID
DATE: December 12, 2005 (revised September 1st, 2007)

This Bulletin announces the initiation of the Construction Industries Division’s (CID) journeyman electrician certificate of competence reciprocity program, and sets out the requirements for participation in the program.

Background

The purpose of the Multi State Reciprocal Electrical Licensing Group is to mutually recognize general journeyman electrician qualifications among participating states with equivalent standards, and to allow electricians from those states to become certified or licensed in another participating state by using that existing certification or license to satisfy the exam and work experience requirements. CID signed the Reciprocal Agreement on October 3, 2005, with Commission approval, and will begin engaging in reciprocity with Reciprocal Member States on January 1st, 2006.

Member States

The current members of the Multi State Reciprocal Electrical Licensing Group are:

  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • Nebraska
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • South Dakota
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

The state of Texas is in process of being accepted. As new states are added to the membership, CID will release updated lists indicating the new states with which reciprocity is offered.

Requirements for Reciprocity

Applicants for a New Mexico reciprocal journeyman certificate of competence must:

  • Hold a journeyman electrician certificate/license from a participating state that is current, active and in good standing, and
  • Complete the application process for a New Mexico journeyman certificate, by submitting an application and a copy of their member-state qualifying journeyman certificate/license, and paying the applicable fee.

NOTE: Applicants who have previously applied for a New Mexico journeyman electrician certificate of competence/license and failed the examination, are not eligible to apply for a reciprocal certificate/license in New Mexico.

Reciprocity in Participating States

New Mexico journeymen electricians wishing to apply for a reciprocal certificate/license in a participating state must contact that state for specific requirements and fees.
