- My license has been expired for over five years. What needs to be done
to reinstate my license?
Applicants whose license has been expired for more than five years must re-enter a licensed school, submit to a scholastic evaluation to determine their training needs, and complete a minimum of 150 hours of remedial education. Upon completion of the remediation, they may apply for and submit to the complete written theory examination, the applicable practical examination, and a written state law examination. - My license has been expired for less than five years. What needs to be
done to reinstate my license?
Applicants whose license has been expired for one year but less than five years shall be required to retake the applicable examinations. - How do I apply for reciprocity in New Mexico?

PART 6 LICENSING BY RECIPROCITY: CREDIT FOR OUT-OF-STATE TRAINING16.34.6.8 RECIPROCITY
A. An applicant for licensure by reciprocity must meet all the requirements of the act and applicable rules. And must provide proof of both a theory and practical examination. If a theory or practical exam was not taken at time of original licensure the above exams must be taken.- Submit an application for reciprocity, a $150 money order or cashiers check, and verification of the following Training Hour Requirements.
- Cosmetologists: 1600 Hrs.
- Barber: 1200 Hrs.
- Manicurist/Pedicurist: 350 Hrs.
- Esthetician: 600 Hrs.
- Electrologist: 600 Hrs.
- Manicurist/Esthetician: 600 Hrs.
- Instructor: 1000 Hrs.
Applicants who do not meet the New Mexico training hour requirements (stated above) may receive 150 working hours experience through current, verified work experience. A letter from their former employer must state the dates of employment (month/year to month/year), and the employer's signature must be notarized. Please call our office for more information.
- Verification of licensure
Applicants for licensure through reciprocity must furnish an affidavit from the state regulatory agency of the state where currently and actively licensed. The affidavit must verify that the applicant holds a current license, has completed the required training hours, and is in good standing with that state. The affidavit must have the state seal of the state where currently licensed.
Along with the application and affidavit, enclose the following:- A photocopy of the license held in the state where you are currently licensed.
- Proof of education equivalent to at least completion of the second year of high school.
- A recent color photograph, front-view, head only, 1.5" X 1.5" taken within the past three months.
- Proof of age--a photocopy of your driver's license may be used (do not send originals)
- Applicants must take and pass the State of New Mexico jurisprudence www.rld.state.nm.us/barberscosmetologists
- A $150 reciprocity fee payable by CASHIER'S CHECK OR MONEY ORDER.
- The application for reciprocity must be completely filled out, signed by the applicant, and notarized.

- How do I apply for a booth or establishment license?
Send a written request for the application packet along with a $10 money order, making sure to include your address on the letter. When you receive the application, fill it out completely, have it notarized, and submit it with a money order in the amount of $200 for the initial license fee. - How do I request an affidavit to be sent to me?
Submit a written request and a $15 money order. Include your full name and license number, and the address where you want to receive the transcript or affidavit. - How much is my renewal fee?
The renewal fee for alll practitioner licenses is $50. If you did not receive a renewal card in the mail, send a $50 money order and attach a letter with your name and license number. The renewal fee for Establishments and Booth Establishments is $50. If a license renewal is late, there will be an additional $40 fee added to each renewal.
- I have moved my booth establishment or establishment location. What do I need to do?
If an establishment has relocated, you must fill out a relocation form and pay a $25 relocation fee.
